Longer conversations and heavier tasks use more tokens than a quick reply. Generating creative, especially images, and deep research such as studying your niche are the most token-intensive things you can do in chat.

Some things do not count against your tokens at all, including the chat titles Mark generates automatically and your weekly AI reports.
